Love Your HeartLove your Heart - February is Heart Health Month

We’re just a few weeks into the new semester, and already the stress levels are climbing. Back to the usual quick fix, right? There’s nothing that shouts “college” like loading up on the caffeine, packaged snacks and energy drinks to push through the emotional rollercoaster. Back to the grind! Power through! We'll sleep when we’re dead!

Now hang on a second.

What happens when the years of sleepless sugar binging finally catch up to us? I’ll tell you what happens: Poor eating habits, high stress and physical inactivity lead to high blood pressure. High blood pressure that can lead to heart disease. And heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. In fact, more than 67 million Americans have it today—and about 610,000 of that soaring number lose their lives to it annually.

February is Heart Health Month, and Sodexo is prepared to give you everything you need to nip this awful disease in the bud. We encourage you to be more physically active, suggest healthy substitutions for your guilty pleasures, remind you of what a heart healthy, balanced plate looks like, and much more.

Our first three suggestions for Heart Health Month:

  1. Choose food items low in sodium, added sugar and trans fats, replacing these items instead with ingredients that come from the earth (like fruits and vegetables).  Check for the Mindful icon.
  2. Coordinate about 150 minutes of physical activity a week with friends and family. The more, the merrier! (Substitute a bus ride or car ride for a walk to class, and you may have gotten 30 minutes in doing an activity you’re required to do anyway.)
  3. Remind yourself and your loved ones to schedule frequent check-ups at the doctor’s office to watch for signs of high blood pressure and cholesterol. Early intervention saves lives.

This month, start loving your heart with all your heart.

Mindful Offering

Mindful offerings meet stringent nutritional criteria based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Each meal part is limited in calories, has fewer than 30% of calories as fat, fewer than 10 % of calories as saturated fat, and is restricted in sodium, and cholesterol. Chefs in our test kitchen develop recipes to meet these criteria in delicious fashion! Look for the Mindful icon to indulge in the healthy and delicious items offered at each meal.
